Miami-Dade, FL - Police apprehended a 55-year-old man, Julio Velazquez, after allegedly threatening to harm law enforcement officers and attempting to set himself and his home on fire.
The incident began on November 27th when Velazquez allegedly attempted suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide from his BMW parked inside a pool house.
His ex-wife intervened by moving the car and calling 911.
Upon arrival, police reported that Velazquez poured gasoline on himself, the floor, and walls of his residence using a red container.
He then threatened to set himself, the house, and officers on fire while holding a lighter and his head covered with a black cloth.
To prevent potential explosions, Florida Power & Light cut off the electricity supply to the house.
Velazquez barricaded himself inside for several days until a police officer observed him briefly leaving and re-entering the house on Wednesday morning.
His ex-wife then convinced him to surrender peacefully.
He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Wednesday afternoon and subsequently released on bond after appearing in court the next day.
Velazquez faces 25 counts of threatening a law enforcement officer and attempted arson.
His next court date is scheduled for January 5th for an arraignment hearing.
