(Miami, FL) - The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a disorganized tropical disturbance expected to bring wind and rain today from New Jersey to Florida along the busy I-95 corridor. This means Florida and the coastal Southeastern U.S. are in for a rainy, windy lead up to Independence Day weekend.
According to the NHC: "We continue to monitor the potential for tropical or subtropical development over the northeast Gulf and southeast U.S coast which has a low (30%) chance of development later this week."
With several rainy days ahead, officials in some communities on Florida's west coast are urging residents to get sandbags if they live in low lying areas. Pasco County officials say residents can bring up to 10 bags to fill with sand which is available in New Port Richey and San Antonio.
Pasco County suffered flooding during two hurricanes last year, and some areas took weeks to dry out.
Now, forecasters warn that the Gulf Coast from Sarasota to the Big Bend area could see six inches of rain over the Fourth of July weekend.
The severe weather is already disrupting holiday travel ahead of this Fourth of July weekend especially in the Sunshine state.
As of this morning, more than 900 flights have been delayed, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. Close to 300 have been cancelled.
