More about BERC (Blood Emergency Readiness Corp):
In mass transfusion emergencies, there is not enough time to collect the necessary units of blood to save lives. The Blood Emergency Readiness Corp (BERC) is a network of community-based, non-profit blood centers across the United States committed to preparing for mass transfusion disasters when they strike. In many disasters and critical-need situations where lives are on the line, medical systems need blood immediately. With lower donation rates nationwide, many blood centers don’t have enough blood on their shelves to handle significant transfusion needs that may happen with mass shootings, natural disasters, or large-scale accidents. SunCoast Blood Centers has joined BERC and is collecting extra units as part of the group for an emergency reserve. We are on-call every three weeks and donors who help this national emergency network are part of the SunCoast Emergency Blood Force.
More about SunCoast Blood Centers’ Green Initiatives:
Since committing to go green, SunCoast Blood Centers has put several initiatives in place as a commitment to a cleaner future. We have the area’s first solar-powered blood donation vehicle. In addition to reducing the need for fuel running generators to power our equipment, which can be noisy, it allows the donor to relax in the same comfort as before, without the noise. The donation process is 100% silent, with no noise pollution or air pollution, is good for the environment, and great for the community we share. This pursuit for environmental sustainability also allows our donors to recycle life through their generosity of giving a piece of themselves to help others.
