Florida man arrested for handing out marijuana because it was christmas

Spreading holiday cheer around Christmas time is generally looked upon as a good thing. However, one Florida man found himself under arrest after police found him handing out marijuana to passersby in downtown St. Petersburg on Saturday.

Officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department confronted Richard Ellis Spurrier, 67, at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday after they learned he'd been passing out marijuana to people who passed him at 16 Second st. near Central Ave, an arrest affidavit stated. When officers approached Spurrier, they noticed he had pieces of marijuana hanging off his right shirt sleeve. A further search of Spurrier revealed a bag of marijuana that weighed 45 grams (about an ounce and a half of marijuana), plus, a purple glass pipe and a black digital scale - both of which contained marijuana residue.

Police also found a prescription bottle with Spurrier's name on it.

Spurrier told police he'd been passing out the marijuana "because it was Christmas."

Police also found a hidden sword inside Spurrier's cane when they arrested him.

Police arrested the 67-year-old for possession of marijuana with the intent to sell or distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Spurrier was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and released on Sunday on his own recognizance.
