High School with no Band Joins Band with No Football Team to Play at Games

There is a town in northern Michigan with two high schools that could be a perfect match under the Friday night lights. We aren't talking about being opponents, we are talking about joining forces to take on other teams. Maple City Glen Lake has no marching band. Forest Area School has no football team. So Maple City Glen Lake invited the other team to be the band at their home game recently and they were thrilled.

Forest Area’s football season was canceled when they didn't have enough players tryout for the team.

Ashley Peckat, a senior, said she "absolutely flipped." She said it’s important to "show people what we can do."

The band is welcome to return for future games, Mattson said. There’s nothing like having a band “rocking out with our fans,” he said.

The band director said said he and his 43 players hope to return if scheduling allows because Forest Area knows what it’s like not to have a band.

In 2011, the district’s music programs were cut. That year, Deike volunteered to teach band before school. In 2012, the high school band program was reinstated but it took years to restart choir and elementary music, he said.

“We had eight kids in band,” Deike said. “We’ve rebuilt here; we know what they’re going through.”

Oh man...I love this. It further proves my theory that there is a lid for every pot! Good luck to both schools in the future and that's your good news, baby!
