13 Organizations At Dartmouth University Face Allegations Of Hazing

Dartmouth University will hire an external investigator to look into a large number of complaints that many organizations on campus are hazing new members. According to the school's newspaper, The Dartmouth, 13 organizations are being investigated following reports of hazing during the fall semester. The groups include "five fraternities, three sororities and co-ed Greek houses, three athletic teams, one student life organization, and the Dimensions performance group."

In addition to the increased number of complaints, a recent article published by the Dartmouth Radical made multiple accusations of hazing based on first and second-hand witness accounts. The article was removed from the publication's website with a note indicating that at least one allegation in the article was determined to be false.

The investigation will only focus on incidents that affect the health and safety of the students, such as forced consumption of alcohol or sexual assault.

“If we get a report that’s [about seeing] five girls dressed in leotards doing a dance, that doesn’t rise to an issue where we’re concerned about the health and safety of our student organizations,” Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs Liz Agosto said.

The investigator, who has not been chosen yet, will work with the Judicial Affairs Office and the College’s general counsel. School officials have not said how long they expect the investigation to take.
