Bags to Beds: Sarasota Woman Helping the Homeless One Mat at a Time

Sarasota woman, Michele Penn, takes used plastic grocery bags and crochets mats for the homeless. These mats provides a little comfort to people who live in the harsh Florida elements. Making these mats is truly a labor of love. Each mat takes about 500 plastic bags and over 10 hours to make.

We spoke to the woman behind these plastic acts of kindness. Donating your plastic grocery bags is great, but prepping them for mat-making is even better! She calls the plastic loops that are ready for crocheting, "plarn". (Plastic yarn!) See how easy it is to create plarn by visiting her Facebook page, Bags to Beds, and watch her quick videos below.

Michele...  you are awesome. Thank you for caring about our community and taking action!
