Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" Turns 25 This Week

What's a "Baby Classic" you ask? It's a mega-hit that has just recently been birthed into "classic hits" status (a.k.a. 25+ years old!)  Believe it or not, Snow's "Informer" is STILL holding on as the #1 hit in 1993 this week so we had to dig back to April 1992 for this one.

Sniff, sniff........you'll be crying like a baby because..........

The week's BABY CLASSIC is:

Eric Clapton, "Tears in Heaven" (1992)

This song from the "Rush" movie soundtrack reached #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart in April 1992. It was the top track for 3 weeks.  This was Clapton's most successful hit winning 3 Grammys: Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Record of the Year. "Tears in Heaven" also landed in the middle of Rolling Stone's ''500 Greatest Songs of All Time'.

Although the song was from 1992, here are things that happened 25 years ago this week (1993):

  • Pop Culture: Peter Townshend's musical "Tommy" premieres in New York City
  • Politics: Russia elects Boris Yeltsin as their leader
  • Sports: 1993 NFL Draft: Drew Bledsoe was the 1st pick by the New England Patriots out of Washington State

Also turning 25 years old this week.........from the 1992 Hot 100 chart, Kriss Kross' "JUMP". I am the only one who actually wore overalls backwards when this song was cool? I also wore the Looney Tunes shirts and Cross Colours clothing... backwards. Gotta love the 90's. - Meredith Michaels
