According to a new survey, 35% of Americans are currently getting calls and letters from debt collectors because of unpaid bills.

The amounts the collection agencies are going after aren’t always big, as 10% of the debts are for less than $125 – including such things as being behind on gym and membership fees, unpaid parking tickets, and utility bills.

But for high income households – in the $70,000 per year range – the debt being called on averages more than $5,000.
